Holy Trinity Athletic Director and Coach Cory Schwartz has announced that he is not returning for the next school year. He is, however, finishing out the rest of this school year.
"I'm leaving because I want to continue coaching 11-man football," Coach Schwartz said. "It is better professionally for me."
Holy Trinity Principal Veronica Alonzo had high praise for Coach Schwartz.
"Coach Schwartz has strengthened our athletic department in many ways," Dr. Alonzo said. "The next athletic director will continue where Coach Swartz had left off. We will keep moving forward in our athletics."
Coach Schwartz led the Celtics in their first ever seasons of 11-man football. He posted a record of 8-12 in two years.
However, late last semester, Dr. Alonzo and the school board decided to make the switch back to six-man football. The decision was made because the team had dwindled in size. At one game during the regular season, the Celtics suited up only 13 players. The Celtics had only about 15 players throughout the year.
After the decision was announced, Coach Schwartz said he would be leaving.
The job opening has been posted on the webpages for the Diocese of Austin and TAPPS. The job posting state that candidates for the job should have at least five years of high school teaching experience and three years of varsity coaching experience. At the minimum, candidates must have their Bachelor's degree in education, CPR/AED certificate and first aid training, CDL bus license, and a teacher/coaching certificate.
Within a week of posting the job, Dr. Alonzo had received inquiries from more than 20 candidates, some of which were from New Mexico and California and some that were located locally.
However, Coach Schwartz’s coaching days are not over at Holy Trinity. He is going to coach track in the spring.
When asked about his experience at Holy Trinity, Coach replied, "It was great and the kids are great."
