After a non-district schedule against larger schools, the Holy Trinity Lady Celtics began their district schedule on Friday against Marble Falls Faith Academy, the state runner-up from 2013.
The Lady Celtics lost 54-20, but the good news the schedule gets easier from here.
“We only played 3A schools during the preseason, so I’m really excited about how we will play in district,” junior Sophia Weisbruch said. “I think we will make playoffs again this year.”
In non-district, the girls went 3-5, but only one school--Killeen Memorial--was the same size as Holy Trinity. Coach Doug Weisbruch said the tough non-district schedule was a good thing.
“I think the girls have all improved their personal game and grown closer as a team and family,” head coach Doug Weisbruch explained. “The preseason games have prepared us for the challenging teams we will face in district play.”
Holy Trinity’s district includes: Marble Falls Faith Academy, Waco Texas Christian Academy, Austin Hill Country, Waco Summit Christian, and Waco Vanguard.
Last year, the Lady Celtics advanced to the playoffs for the first time in school history and won its first round game against Garland Christian. The girls lost to eventual state champion Texoma Christian in the second round.
Holy Trinity ended the regular season tied with Austin Hill Country and Waco Vanguard for second place in the district. The Celtics beat Vanguard, but forfeited to Hill Country due to a conflict in most of the players’ schedules landing them in the third place seed.
The Lady Celtics are playing Texas Christian Academy today at 6 p.m.
Next week, the Celtics are playing Hill Country in Austin on Jan. 17, and Summit at HT on Jan. 21.
