TEMPLE—Holy Trinity Catholic High School and representatives from state and city governments held a ground-breaking ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, to celebrate the beginning of construction on a $1.3 million storm shelter.
The building, funded in part by a $1 million grant from FEMA, will serve Holy Trinity as a cafeteria on a daily basis. However, in inclement weather, the building will be utilized by the city and citizens as a safe shelter against the storm.
Construction officially began on the structure last week.
Temple Mayor Bill Jones III and Temple Fire Chief Lonzo Wallace spoke at the ceremony, expressing appreciation for the cooperation between Holy Trinity and the city in creating the first tornado shelter in Temple.
Greg Pekar with the state's Emergency Management Agency also spoke at the ceremony.
Architects Larry Neal and Tim Rafferty and Diocese of Austin School Superintendent Dr. Ned Vanders joined Temple City Manager David Blackburn and Holy Trinity school board members at the event.
